How To: SCT Custom Tune
Submitted By: RIZ
Overview
Recently, I purchased an Xcalibrator II from Wayne Foy at Hypnotic Illusions and thought it would be difficult to install. So here is how it went. A SCT XcalibratorII custom tuner is probably one of the easiest ways to get the most out a stock or slightly tuned motor. This hand held device is made to work with Ford vehicles and is designed to be programmed specifically for your vehicle. Tuning your vehicle with the programmer can yield anywhere from 15 to 25 HP. Having a few extra modifications to your vehicle, such as dual exhaust and an intake filter, can really open it up. With these modifications such as these, you could easily see anywhere from 40 to 60HP gain after doing a custom tune. **NOTE this is not RWHP**
Your local retailer of this product will ask you some basic information including: computer number(located on outside of your vehicle's computer), motor size, type of transmission (auto or manual), rear end gears, tire and rim size, exhaust and intake modifications, and anything else you might have done to enhance vehicle performance. With that information, the vendor can give you pre-programmed choices of tuning which you can change in a matter of minutes.

Required Material
- Maintenance Manual for your Vehicle's Year/Make/Model
- Xcalibrator II Tuner
The choices I was given when used for MY 1997 Mountaineer were:
1. 87 Octane which is like a daily driver program for performance with fuel efficiency.
2. Premium Octane program, for higher performance to get the most for your bang (my favorite).
3. A towing package which controls more of your transmission and torque.
The same tuner was then reprogrammed to be used in a 2005 Ford F150
Procedure
1. While your vehicle is turned off, locate the diagnostic connector. Refer to your maintenance manual for the location of this connector on your vehicle. Then connect the plug from your calibrator.
2. Once connected to you vehicle, the calibrator will use your vehicle's battery for power and the menu screen will turn on.
3. Scroll down through the menu options until you see the program vehicle option.
4. By pressing the select button you will see the next menu which are your pre-programmed options: 87 Octane, Performance Octane, and Towing (in this instance). Scroll up or down until you see the option you want. I chose Performance Tune which requires running premium octane in your vehicle.
5. Once selected, your desired tune will appear in this window. At this time you are to turn your key to the accessories position. **NOTE: As the screen says, DO NOT start the vehicle at this time.**
6. After Step 5 is complete, you will see the module begin to download factory settings and then upload the performance tune. Be patient as this process could take several minutes. Once the upload is complete, the module will beep letting you know it is complete. Turn off the key, unplug your module, then go out and have some fun and enjoy your new tune.
