How To: Fuel Filter Replacement
Submitted By: Timmay
Overview
The fuel filter is a perfect maintenance for your fuel system. If the filter becomes clogged, it will decrease MPG and create a loss of power, as well as create the possibility of damaging your fuel pump. The fuel filter should be changed every year.

Required Material- 13mm wrench (or appropriate tool for your vehicle)
- Special Fuel Filter tool (available for a few dollars at auto stores)
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
- Catch pan
- Rags
- Flathead screwdriver
- Maintenance Manual for your Vehicle’s Year/Make/Model (optional)
NOTE: PLEASE MAKE SURE ENGINE IS COLD WHEN PERFORMING THIS MAINTENANCE PROCEDURE.
Procedure
1. Remove pressure from the fuel system. This procedure is started by opening the fuel door and taking off the gas cap.
2. Continue by locating the Schrader valve. It looks just like the valves on your tires and is located to the left of the intake manifold.
You can also pull the fuse for the fuel pump. Check your owner’s manual to see which fuse it is and remove it as shown below. Run the engine until it stalls. Doing this will pull a lot of pressure off the fuel system.
3. Put your rag under the valve and release the pressure from it by pressing on the valve much like you would to remove air pressure from your tires.
4. Use the 13mm socket or wrench (or proper tool) to remove the support clamp. Consult your Maintenance Manual for the proper tool.
5. Pop of the lock clips that are over the tubing. Use a flat head screwdriver if necessary.
6. Put your catch pan under the filter and place your fuel filter tool on the filter. Use it to pop off both ends. Put the tool over the end of one of the filter, and pull off the filter. This action is performed on both ends of the fuel filter.
The red arrow pointing up (see picture below) is where the fuel filter disconnect tool goes on. The red arrow pointing to the left shows to push the connector away from the filter.
Put the disconnect tool over the connector.
Push the Disconnect tool away from the fuel filter.
7. Pull out the filter.
8. Install a new filter making sure the flow direction is correct. Push the fuel lines back over the fuel filter until you hear a click. Put the support clamp back on.
The filter will have one side with INLET stamped onto it. Have the fuel flowing in through this side of the filter.
9. If the fuel pump fuse was removed, put it back into the fuse block. Turn the key to the ON position, and let the fuel pump engage. Check to make sure there are no leaks. Enjoy.
