How To:Clean The Engine Bay

Submitted By: spindlecone

Overview

There are a lot of misconceptions regarding how to clean engines and the entire engine bay. Many people say that you need to cover this or cover that. Most of this information is untrue. You do not need to cover the coilpack (is a sealed unit), so are the alternator, battery, and PCM. With that being said, cleaning the engine bay is a fairly easy mod to help give your vehicle more of a show-quality look.

The procedure described above is intended for modern-day type engines. Should you have a vehicle with older electronics, carburetors, and/or distributors, you will need to take extra steps to protect the items mentioned.

Procedure

Before:

1. If you have an open intake such as a MAC, cover it with a plastic bag.

2. On a cold engine, spray it all down with Simple Green.

3. Let it set for 10 minutes and spray it all down with water. When rinsing use a fine spray, don't hit areas such as the PCM, fuse box, etc. with a steady stream of water. Be sure to rinse vertically from an overhead, straight-down position.

4. If excess dirt still exists, repeat Steps 2 & 3.

5. Allow the engine and engine bay to dry.

6. Remove the bag from the CAI.

7. With the engine still cool, apply the Pigspit to all surfaces.

8. Wipe off the excess and enjoy your nice, clean engine.
