How To: Air Intake Installation

Submitted By: Melissa

Overview

This is a nice simple first-time mod for the engine. It's a good performance enhancer and will help make a noticeable difference in your FordRide. Keep in mind the pictures and instructions are from installing the air intake on a 2001 Explorer Sport. Your exact procedure may vary, but this guide will be a good general overview of the procedure needed to do this type of modification.
This modification description is based very closely to the directions provided by K&N Filters.

Required Material
  • Flat Blade Screwdriver
  • 7mm Wrench
  • 10mm Wrench
  • 13mm Wrench
  • 4mm Allen Wrench
  • 5mm Allen Wrench
  • Drill (only if equipped with second vent line)
  • 5/8" Drill Bit (only if equipped with second vent line)
  • Maintenance Manual for your Vehicle's Year/Make/Model (optional)

Procedure

    1. With the ignition off, disconnect the battery's negative cable.

    2. Disconnect the mass air sensor electrical connection. The easiest way to do this is to depress the flat blade screwdriver on the clip.

    3. Remove the throttle bottle cover via three bolts.

    4. Remove the crankcast vent hose from the intake tube.

    5. If vehicle is equipped with a second vent line, remove hose from intake tube then release the two clips retaining the hose to the engine cover.

    6. Loosen the hose clamps at the mass air sensor and the throttle body and remove the intake tube.

    7. Pry the bottom of the air cleaner from the stock grommets with a flat blade screwdriver and then pull up and away from the front and side of the truck. This may be difficult to do and may take some time.

    8. Remove the mass air sensor via four bolts from the air cleaner.

    Procedure (cont'd)
    9. Assemble the mass air adapter, gaskets, heat shield and mass air sensor.

    10. Install the trim seal to the heat shield. This may be difficult to do and may take some time.

    11. Install the silicone hose and hose clamps onto the mass air sensor.

    12. Install the silicone hose and hose clamps onto the throttle body.

    13. Assemble the saddle bracket.

    14. Remove the upper alternator bolt. Slide the saddle bracket on the alternator bolt. Reinstall the alternator bolt.

    15. Push the wire harness push clip into the hole on the hole on the saddle bracket.

    16. Install the rubber hose onto the new intake tube.

    17. Install the new intake tube onto the throttle body keeping it in line with the saddle bracket.

    18. If vehicle is equipped with a second vent line, line up the vent hose on the intake tube and make a mark on the intake tube for drilling.

    19. After marking the intake tube, remove the tube from the vehicle and drill a 5/8" hole into the intake tube then install the grommet. Reinstall the intake tube.

    20. Secure the intake tube to the throttle body via the hose clamp. Secure the intake tube to the saddle bracket with a hose clamp.

    21. If vehicle is equipped with a second vent line, install the second vent line.

    22. Install the filtercharger onto the heat shield.

    23. Install the heat shield assembly onto the new intake tube and tighten hose clamps.

    24. Reconnect the mass air sensor (see photo in step 2).

    25. Reattach the throttle body cover (see photo in step 3).

    26. Reconnect the battery's negative cable (see photo on step1).

    27. Slowly close the hood of the vehicle to make sure intake has clearance. If a problem arises, open the throttle body clamp and adjust intake tube accordingly (see photo on step 20).

    28. Turn over the engine and listen for air leaks or odd noises. Do the same with a test drive.

    29. Step back, admire your first engine mod and enjoy the ride!
